What is BarCamp?
If you're not already familiar with the BarCamp phenomenon, don't worry. You're not alone. There's only been one BarCamp held in Louisiana so far, and it took place earlier this year. It's not surprising, then, that many of us have never heard the term. Here is a brief definition:
"BarCamp is an ad-hoc unconference born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from attendees.
Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join." (From
TheRulesOfBarCamp website.)
Why do I care?
Good question. Two reasons:
At least two more BarCamp-type events are slated for this year, the first on October 4th in Lafayette (more on this later), and another one that will take place in New Orleans, date TBD. The New Orleans BarCamp is brought to you by Chris Schultz and Voodoo Ventures, the very same group responsible for Louisiana's inaugural "unconference" back in February. Details will be released as soon as they're available, but for now just know that you'll have the opportunity to experience BarCamp first hand, and understanding what it entails is the first step in not missing out.
The second, more important reason to understand BarCamp is because it was founded on many of the same principals that are at the core of Louisiana 2.0. We believe in a Louisiana where cities are connected, united by a spirit of collaboration that has reached unprecedented levels in recent months. Where organizations share information and resources, so that they become stronger and move closer to achieving their goals.
As TheRulesOfBarCamp state, "BarCamp is about support as much as it is about information." So is Louisiana 2.0. Now that you're here, we hope you'll share what you know--about your business, your organization, and the latest developments underway in your city or region. The reason for adding content to the site is so people will know what you're up to, and can help continue to spread the word. Having an event? Post it here to increase attendance. Starting a business, or hiring new employees? Our members may know (or be!) the perfect candidate for the job.
Although Lousiana 2.0 was created to share information about technology initiatives, encourage new growth in the startup ecosystem and connect individuals and organizations catalyzing change in their hometowns, it is a community that is open to everyone. If you have something to contribute or just wish to learn, you are encouraged to participate by becoming a member. No matter what industry, region, or background you hail from, you can add value as part of this network.
Built by its members, Louisiana 2.0 isn't owned by an organization, company, or brand. It belongs to everyone, and benefits all. Use it to your advantage--because by helping yourself, you can help the community.
Now what?
Get involved. Help build something in Louisiana that will alter the course of history. We can become an economic force in the global arena. We can make the Silicon Bayou a reality. But first, we have to work together. Welcome to Louisiana 2.0. Welcome to the future of Louisiana.
